There is the world that we live in and one that we imagine. [This collection of work represents an effort to] inch closer to the latter.

Unheard Stories // Physical Computing

Participatory art piece showcasing the untold stories embedded in everyday tools as they act as silent witnesses to many hands.

Hall effect sensors, Rotary Encoder, Arduino microcontroller, Resolume, Projection

Physical Interaction: Utilizing the hand crank of a pencil sharpener as a media timeline for the playback of a pencil’s last use. Piece incorporates four stories, one for each pencil.

Disassembled mouse wheel
Jig attached to sharpener to spin rotary encoder at pace of the crank

Rotary Encoder: A disassembled mouse wheel acts a rotary encoder in the project to signal when the sharpener’s crank is in motion. Arudiuno reads this signal and sends a keyboard write to trigger projection scenes in Resolume.

Magnets placed discretely in eraser caps
Hall effect sensors placed under blocks

Hall Effect Sensors: Magnets were placed in each eraser cap and magnet detecting sensors were placed under each pencil block. These sensors informed Resolume which story was selected to trigger the correct projection.
