There is the world that we live in and one that we imagine. [This collection of work represents an effort to] inch closer to the latter. (Frank Chimero)
Ambiance
This design proposal establishes a new narrative for a hot springs resort aiming to acknowledge and represent Hot Spring's role as a trail town hosting 3800 yearly thru-hikers headed northbound on the Appalachian Trail. With identified interior atmospheres within Appalachia mountain and valley landscapes, the site assumes two opposing topographical experiences divided by a conceptual fault line reflecting geothermal spring's natural indication of conflicting conditions and gaps between tectonic plates.
Challenging the concept of “Interiority” through emphasizing naturally occurring interior conditions throughout Appalachia landscapes.
Summit experience - Geothermal mineral pools line the riverside to reflect the elevated views, chilling winds, and a steam-produced cloud cover associated with summiting a mountain on the Appalachian trail. Endorphins released during the transition from hot to cold bodies of water further reflect hiker’s adrenaline while reaching a peak.
The remainder of the site dedicates existing ruins to community engagement by repurposing a former hotel’s original mineral baths into garden beds which continue the tradition of water being pumped through the space. With half of the structure hosting a geothermal greenhouse and the other serving as a living machine water treatment system, both guests and community members are exposed to the healing nature of water and Appalachian’s Trail’s culture of “paying it forward.”
